Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP)
Periodontitis is an infection in the gums caused from a buildup of plaque that hardens and forms tartar. At the site of the plaque build up, the tartar begins to grab onto bacteria that can be harmful to the gums in the surrounding area. Periodontitis is a more advanced stage of gingivitis that begins to erode the gums and bone structure in the surrounding area of the tooth. At this stage, if untreated, this can eventually lead to tooth loss as the bone that supports the tooth is resorbed.

The laser-assisted new attachment procedure, or the LANAP protocol, is used to treat periodontitis by regenerating natural cells in the patient’s teeth.
Why should I choose the LANAP Procedure instead of gum surgery?
The LANAP procedure is proven to be more comfortable and less time consuming than gum surgery, regardless of the stage of periodontitis. The LANAP procedure only takes two two-hour sessions to complete while gum surgery takes roughly seven to ten hours. This procedure also refrains from making any incisions in the gums which makes for a much more comfortable post-procedure experience. There is no need for stitches and no chance of infection or bleeding. The recovery time is almost immediate because the lasers used in the procedure seal any blood vessels or nerve-endings that may have been exposed. The tissue is the only part of the mouth that needs to recover, which occurs through regeneration of the cells in the patient’s gums. Immediately after the treatment, the patient as able to go about his or her day as if the procedure never took place because there is no need for strong anesthesia or gas.
What does the LANAP Procedure cost?
This procedure costs just about the same as conventional surgeries to treat gum disease. The cost of the LANAP Procedure will vary depending on your geographic location and the qualifications of your dentist.
Depending on your insurance company, your LANAP procedure may be covered. While it is not considered to be an extensive form of surgery, most insurance companies put it in the same category as conventional surgeries. If your insurance provider covers conventional surgeries, then it will likely cover the LANAP Procedure as well, and you will be reimbursed for the cost of treatment.
